From Madeleine Moon MP, 22 Feb 06

Dear Mr Mxxxxxxxx

Thank you for your e-mail.

I will be supporting any campaign to honour the last surviving veteran

of the Great War.  I have my grandfather's diary of his experience in

France from 1914 and 1915.  He was killed in 1917.

Yours

Madeleine Moon

From Michael Howard MP, 08 Nov 05

The Conservatives know that the county owes the soldiers of this country a great debt, their sacrifice brings us security and they do their job in the worst of circumstances. Please be assured that Mr Howard attaches considerable importance to the views that are put to him and your comments have been carefully noted.

From Rt Hon Thomas McAvoy MP, 22 Feb 06

State Funerals for First World War Veterans
I enclose a copy of a further letter I have received from the Minister for Veterans, Don Touhig MP, regarding the above.
As you can see, the Minister agrees it is important that the passing of the last of the First World War veterans should be marked in an appropriate manner, and he will announce details of the plans when a final decision has been made.
I hope you find this information interesting.

and the letter from Doug Touhig, Minister for Veterans, referred to above

Thank you for your letter of 8 December enclosing one from your constituent Mr xxx, about our plans to commemorate the deaths of the last veterans from World War One.
Like Mr xxx, I believe that the service and sacrifice of those who served in World War One deserve our admiration, respect and gratitude. I also think it important that the final passing of that generation should be marked in an appropriate manner. Planning for this has indeed started and will require fairly extensive consultation both within Government and with outside individuals and organisations. Although it would be premature to do so at this stage, I shall announce the details of our plans to the House of Commons as soon as I am able to do so.
I hope that this is helpful.
